Teaching: Vengeful Generosity & love for the Wicked Matthew 5:38-48

Our life must be marked by:

  1. Vengeful generosity

  1. It’s not just about what you do
  2. Purity is the priority
  3. Marriage is not malleable

Teaching: Committing Murder in Your Heart Matthew 5:21-26

  1. What is commonly believed is this: Anger is OK, Murder is not. (v. 21)
  2. But Jesus teaches us this: Anger in every form is the same as Murder. (v. 22)
  3. Application- Reconcile with your Brother. (23-26)
  4. Application- Settle conflict with unbelievers. (v. 25-26)

“We must not think that because we are not on death row, we do not deserve to be. We may not have murdered anyone, but we may have allowed anger toward another person to feed a root of bitterness in our hearts. Perhaps it is time to kill the root and restore the relationship. Until we do, we are the offender in need of the very mercy we are withholding.” – Daryl Crouch.[1]

Teaching: A Greater Righteousness Matthew 5:17-20

 

  1. The Law & the Prophets are fulfilled in Jesus not abolished.
  2. Therefore, we do not relax the commandments of God!
  3. Rather we must have a greater righteousness than even the moralists.

Teaching: This is How You Change the World Matthew 5:13-16

  1. You are the salt of the earth. (v. 13)
    • What is salt used for?
    • Warning
  2. You are the light of the world (v. 14-15)
    • City on a hill
    • Light of a Lamp
  3. Culminating exhortation: (v. 16) “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Beatitudes

  1. Blessed Emptiness (v. 3-6)

    • 3- Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
    • 4- Blessed are those who morn for they shall be comforted
    • 5- Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth
    • 6- Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied
  2. Overflowing Fullness (v. 7-12)

    • 7- Blessed are the merciful for they shall receive mercy
    • 8- Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God
    • 9- Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God
    • 10- Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
    • 11- Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
    • 12- Rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
